Mise-en-scene work

1. Camera

The camera is angled below the stage to make the dancers appear taller and more important as the audience feels like they’re watching the show. The dancers are in the frame and everything around them is almost blurred, which makes the audience feel like the dancers are the only important thing on the stage. Ali (the protagonist) is located in the middle and appears to be more focused than the other dancers which gives the impression she’s the protagonist of the film. The dark background draws the audiences focus to the brighter foreground which could be purposely done to draw the attention to Ali. The dancers become darker and darker as they get to the sides, this could show the unimportance of some of the characters, making the characters that are more lit up appear more important. The main focus of the shot is Ali as she is central and the most lit up which makes it clear that she’s important

2.  Mise-en-scene

The frame is very bright and saturated, giving it a red tint. Which could connote that these dancers are being seductive, the limited amount of clothes also brings back this idea. The lighting is also very artificial, which fits with the film as it’s a show, making the audience feel like they’re watching the real show. They’re also spotlights to add to the idea of it being a show, or performance. Due to the room being really dark, the dancers stand out more as they’re almost illuminated in comparison to the background, it also makes it unclear if its night or day as its always dark, which adds tension. Ali is the most lit person on the stage and due to her being central the attention is instantly drawn to her. The décor of this frame is very basic, there’s lights around the stage to give the impression of it being a show, however there’s no props or pieces of furniture in this shot. There seems to be no walls which gives the impression that it’s a large room that stretches past what we can see, and the limited amount of props also makes the stage appear bigger.

3. People

All of the other dancers in the shot are wearing similar clothes, however Ali (in the middle) looks totally different to the other dancers as she’s wearing a full costume, which shows that she’s important and that the director wanted her to stand out. The other girls on this frame also have dark brown hair that blends into the backdrop which makes them all look similar and bland, however Ali has bright blonde curled hair which also draws attention to her. All of the other girls have a different posture to the main protagonist as they all look stern and up straight, almost like they’re trying really hard to look professional, but Ali looks more relaxed (like he doesn’t have to try as hard to look good) however they all look similar as they’re all doing the same choreography. Ali’s leg is higher than the other dancers which also draws attention back to her as she just appears better than them. Whereas the other dancers are looking off screen, Ali’s looking directly at the camera, which adds tension and makes it clear that she’s more important than the others. All of the girls are positioned around Ali almost like she’s the leader.

4. Composition

The composition of this shot is very symmetrical, all of the dancers are in lines and are standing in the correct places, however Ali is very central, so it almost looks like the girls are surrounding her. All of the other girls are fairly close together however there’s a slightly bigger space around Ali with could imply that she’s more important and needs more space as she’s doing something different than the other girls. However, it could also show that they’re almost scared of her, as she has more authority. Ali is centre stage which shows that she’s going to be on the stage for a lot longer than the other dancers as they can easily get off the stage, but by being central its harder.
